National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER) is currently working on a total 35 ground breaking research projects to facilitate coal mining.

NaCCER represents a bold step forward, aimed at addressing the pressing challenges in the coal and energy sectors, while positioning India as a leader in sustainable energy.

NaCCER is being established in two phases: Phase-I is developed under the administrative control of CMPDIL strengthening the current infrastructure and expertise at Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI).  In future, Phase-II shall bring forth a permanent, world-class facility designed to foster long-term innovation under Coal India Limited (CIL) leadership.

The objective of NaCCER is to carry out research that strengthens self-reliance in coal and energy production, while ensuring sustainability and environmental stewardship. The vision is to create a national research hub of global standards where innovation thrives and industry challenges are met with innovative solutions. From clean coal technologies and AI-powered mining to renewable energy and environmental conservation, NaCCER will tackle almost all critical areas for the future of energy and sustainability.

Talking to m4edia persons Head of Department, Science and Technology Department, CMPDI, Amarkant Mishra said, “We are committed to build a multidisciplinary team of experts, creating partnerships with leading institutions like the IITs and NITs, and collaborating with start-ups and with National & International stakeholders to unlock the full potential of this initiative. In line with same, an MoU has already been signed with IIT(ISM), Dhanbad-TEXMiN and MoUs with IIT, Hyderabad and IIT, Madras are under finalisation.”

Mishra also said that the thrust of NaCCER is to develop new technologies and bring the proven research of TRL-4 from the lab to the field—delivering real-world impact that drives both industry growth and environmental sustainability. Accordingly, major chunk of the funding shall go towards all such projects that can translate into effective applications, he added.

On the occasion General Manager, Science and Technology Department, CMPDI, Shishir Dutta said that establishment of NaCCER’s shall be supported by the R&D Fund of CIL with the expert committees ensuring smooth execution and oversight. “In line with the same, an Advisory Expert Committee consisting of Experts from all over the country and Empanelment of Subject matter experts has been done. NaCCER will foster synergy across national and global research, and ensure that India leads in energy innovation for decades to come,” he added.
