Cold wave to return, minimum temperature expected to drop

Wednesday, 08 January 2025 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)'s Ranchi Meteorological Centre has forecasted a significant drop in minimum temperatures across Jharkhand starting tomorrow. In a bulletin issued today, the IMD stated that night temperatures are expected to fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next 72 hours.

The decline in temperature follows a brief rise caused by a Western Disturbance, which influenced the weather conditions across the state over the past 48 hours.

Ranchi recorded a minimum temperature of 11.4 degrees Celsius today, while Jamshedpur’s IMD observatory noted a reading of 13.2 degrees Celsius. Daltonganj’s minimum temperature stood at 12 degrees Celsius, and Bokaro recorded 12.5 degrees Celsius. These figures indicate a temporary warmth that is expected to dissipate with the approaching cooler phase.

The Western Disturbance, responsible for the recent rise in temperatures, is currently positioned as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan. It exists at an altitude of 3.1 kilometers above mean sea level, with an associated trough extending into the middle and upper tropospheric levels up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level.

Additionally, an induced cyclonic circulation has formed over northeast Rajasthan and its adjoining areas. This system extends up to 1.5 kilometers above mean sea level, further influencing weather patterns in the region.

With the dissipation of the Western Disturbance, Jharkhand is expected to experience a cold wave. Residents should prepare for colder nights and ensure adequate measures to combat the dip in temperature. The IMD advises people to stay informed about local weather updates and take necessary precautions during this colder spell.

“ The evolving atmospheric conditions highlight the impact of cyclonic circulations and troughs on regional weather, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and timely advisories to mitigate any adverse effects on daily life and agriculture,” said an official.
