The political tussle between the BJP and AAP escalated on Thursday as both parties engaged in a poster war, accusing each other of voter fraud ahead of the upcoming Delhi assembly polls in a bid to sway public opinion. The development came amid an intensifying feud between the two parties where AAP recently accused the BJP of voter deletions and cash distribution to buy votes and in return BJP slammed AAP over alleged vote rigging.
The BJP released a poster targeting AAP leader and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, titled "Farzi Voters Se Ishq Hai" (love for fake voters). The poster, inspired by the design of the popular web series 'Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story', replaced the series title with the caption "Voter List Me Scam 2024" (Scam in the Voter List 2024).
"Kejriwal's new game in Delhi! Attempt to save power by rigging votes. The house owner did not know, and this fraud had created hundreds of votes on his home address, particularly of a specific community, with ages ranging from 40 to 80 years," the BJP alleged in a social media post.
The AAP countered the BJP’s accusations by sharing a video of Kejriwal labeled “G.O.A.T" (greatest of all time), in an attempt to dismiss the allegations. AAP too, shared a poster featuring BJP leader and Union home minister Amit Shah, accusing the BJP of undermining democracy and tarnishing the legacy of Dr BR Ambedkar. The poster read, "Beware Delhiites. In the new year, you have changed your calendar, but BJP has not changed its character."
AAP also alleged in the poster that the BJP was responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in Delhi. AAP also shared a post which portrayed Kejriwal as the 'Greatest of All Time'.
BJP earlier mocked the AAP supremo in a series of posts on X. It released a poster of him dressed in a theatrical priest-like avatar, reminiscent of actor Rajpal Yadav’s character in the 2007 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa. The image showed Kejriwal adorned with rudraksha beads, flower garlands, and vermilion on his forehead, with incense sticks tucked behind his ear, in what the BJP described as a staged, election-time display of religiosity.
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva alleged that Kejriwal and his allies are deeply involved in political crimes aimed at systematically ruining Delhi step by step. He pointed fingers specifically at AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, accusing him of falsely blaming BJP for removing his wife Anita Singh’s name from the voter list. He asked Singh to clarify where exactly his votes and those of his wife are registered.
Additionally, Sachdeva alleged that Delhi Mayor Mahesh Kumar has arranged for dual voter registrations for his wife, under the names Mamta and Nidhi, at the same address, with identical photos for both entries. “Kejriwal has spent the past ten years positioning himself as the champion of fraudulent votes, whether they belong to Bangladeshi Muslims, Rohingyas, or double voters,” he said.
Meanwhile, Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh called out the BJP for spreading falsehoods, dubbing it the “Bharatiya Jhootha Party.” He stated, “The master party of spreading lies across the world has once again made an attempt to mislead. As a representative of the Aam Aadmi Party, it is our responsibility to counter every single lie of the ‘Bharatiya Jhootha Party’.”
He further claimed that when his party exposed the BJP, they resorted to making laughable allegations, claiming that the AAP is either adding or deleting votes. Responding to the allegation by the BJP of dual voter registration, the senior AAP leader also shared that his wife has already applied for deletion of her name from the voters list on January 4, 2024.
“In 2013, I wrote to the District Election Officer in Sultanpur, requesting that my name be deleted from the voter list and transferred elsewhere. After that, the municipal elections were conducted under the supervision of the State Election Officer. If my name was still on the voter list for the 2018 municipal elections, it is the employees under CM Yogi who prepared that list. Go talk to them,” he said.
