BIS celebrates 78th Foundation Day, focuses on quality standards for economic growth

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) commemorated its 78th Foundation Day on Monday by organizing an Industry Meet in Jamshedpur. The event brought together over 100 participants from across Jharkhand’s large, medium, small, and micro-industrial sectors.

Kaushalendra Kumar, Joint Director of BIS, outlined the objectives of the programme, emphasizing the pivotal role of medium and large-scale manufacturers in enhancing stakeholder participation in standard formation. He detailed initiatives such as Standardization Cells, the Annual Programme for Standardization, and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with academic institutions. Kumar also highlighted initiatives like Manak Manthan and the Young Professionals Programme, which support the standards formulation process. “BIS certification offers numerous benefits to industries, making our role vital for quality assurance and economic growth,” he said.

Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Chief Guest and Director of the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), lauded BIS’s efforts in promoting quality and innovation. “The Foundation Day marks a journey of trust and progress. BIS has set quality benchmarks, helping Indian products gain global recognition and aligning with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision,” he remarked.

Ratan Kumar Mallik, General Manager of Bokaro Steel Plant (SAIL) and Special Guest, highlighted BIS’s role in synchronizing Indian standards with international norms. “BIS’s focus on quality and safety has significantly contributed to India’s economic growth,” he noted.

Prof. Mrityunjay Kumar Sinha, Dean of Research and Consultancy at NIT Jamshedpur, underscored the comprehensive scope of BIS’s standardization efforts. “From bedsheets to jewelry, BIS’s impact is far-reaching. To achieve India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, collaboration between academia, industry, and BIS is crucial,” he said.

Santokh Singh, Vice President of the Adityapur Small Industries Association (ASIA), discussed BIS’s role in upgrading local industries. “Thanks to BIS’s continuous improvements, industries in the Adityapur Industrial Area are contributing significantly to building a New India,” Singh said.

Anjan Kundu, Senior Engineer and Chief Vigilance Officer at IDTR Jamshedpur, spoke about government initiatives supporting entrepreneurship and skill development through training programs. He emphasized that expanding the stakeholder base benefits industries, students, and consumers alike.

Prabhu Nath Yadav, Joint Director of BIS, delivered an in-depth presentation covering topics such as the Manak Pravardhak Programme, the SMART Initiative, capacity building, and the process of obtaining BIS certification. He also provided updates on recent Quality Control Orders (QCOs), including those on industrial coke and the Omnibus Technical Regulation.
