Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday strongly condemned the alleged assault on a Punjabi-origin NRI couple in the state’s picturesque Chamba district. The incident, which occurred on June 11 in Khajjar near Dalhousie, has sparked outrage and prompted the Chief Minister to order a comprehensive investigation to ensure the perpetrators face strict legal action.
The condemnation follows a 'Zero FIR' registered by the Punjab Police in Amritsar on Sunday, acting on a complaint filed by Kanwaljit Singh, who alleged he was attacked by a group of men over a parking dispute. Singh, along with his Spanish wife, recently returned to Punjab after residing in Spain for 25 years.
Notably, Punjab’s NRI Affairs’ Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal had also written a letter to Himachal CM to intervene in the matter, urging a meticulous probe into the assault to ensure justice for the victims.
In response to the incident, Sukhu directed the authorities to conduct a detailed inquiry, underscoring the state’s commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors alike. The CM emphasized that such incidents tarnish the image of Himachal Pradesh, known globally for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and hospitality symbolized by the adage “Athithi Devo Bhava” (guests are like gods).
A statement from the Himachal Pradesh government affirmed its dedication to upholding public safety and investigating the matter thoroughly. It noted that while the state prides itself on being a safe haven for tourists, isolated incidents like this demand swift and decisive action.
Meanwhile, Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal has also sought CM Sukhu's intervention, urging a meticulous probe into the assault to ensure justice for the victims.
HP Police Issue Clarification
In response to widespread reports and social media discussions surrounding the incident, the Himachal Pradesh Police issued a clarification on Monday to provide context and dispel misinformation. According to the police statement, an initial inquiry revealed that the altercation ensued when Singh and his brother allegedly engaged in inappropriate behaviour involving female tourists and locals under the guise of palmistry.
The police promptly intervened and brought Singh and his wife to the Sultanpur Police Post, where they were offered medical examination and legal proceedings, both of which they declined. Their statements, refusing to register a complaint, were duly recorded.
The police clarified that this incident is distinct from other recent events, including an incident involving ASI Paramjit Singh from Chandigarh Police, highlighting the unrelated nature of these incidents to the widely publicized altercation involving Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut and a CISF constable at Chandigarh airport.
