Organ donation from brain-dead patients can indeed be a lifeline for those in need of organs such as hearts and livers. It is essential to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage people to consider this selfless act that can make a significant difference in the lives of others, said Dr Vimal Bhandari, former director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).
Dr. Bhandari pointed out that in many parts of the world, including India, there is a significant shortage of organs for transplantation surgeries. This shortage often leads to prolonged waiting times for patients in need of life-saving transplants, resulting in adverse health outcomes and even fatalities, he said.
