SPARKLING TRADITIONS

Let’s embrace the joy of light over darkness, cherish the warmth of traditions and celebrate the happiness of shared moments, writes SAKSHI PRIYA

Where there is light, there is life.” This sentiment captured the essence of Diwali, a festival of profound significance celebrated by millions, particularly in India. As homes sparkled with twinkling lights and the air filled with the enticing aroma of sweets, Diwali transformed into more than just a holiday; it became a vibrant celebration of life, love, and togetherness, bringing families closer and reuniting loved ones who eagerly returned home. The festivities commence with Dhanteras, a day dedicated to wealth and prosperity, when people traditionally bought new items to invite good fortune. The excitement of homecoming resonated throughout the country. Each diya lit symbolised moments of unity, cherished memories, and the promise of brighter days ahead. For many, Diwali was the one occasion each year when homecoming was a certainty. Students travelled back from universities, and workers journeyed long distances to be with their families. This time of reunion brought laughter and warmth, making the festival truly unforgettable.

Rooted in rich spiritual traditions, Diwali marked the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after vanquishing Ravana, symbolising the triumph of light over darkness. The festival also honoured Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. A key ritual was Lakshmi Puja, held on Amavasya, the new moon night, during which families cleaned their homes and lit diyas to welcome the Goddess. A clean, well-lit home was believed to attract her blessings for a prosperous year ahead.

Delhi’s renowned Chandni Chowk transformed into a bustling marketplace. The narrow streets were alive with people searching for lights and decorations to brighten their homes. Rows of vendors displayed beautifully painted diyas, with classic red ones available in sets of six for just `60. Shoppers found warm yellow lights or bright, multi- coloured LED strings, with prices starting as low as `80. The market buzzed with laughter and conversation, reflecting the excitement and anticipation surrounding the festival.

In Uttam Nagar, artisans like Suresh kept the spirit of Diwali alive by crafting cherished diyas. Suresh shared how his family tradition of making diyas had been passed down through generations. Each diya carried a piece of their heart, symbolising love and hope. For them, the festival was not merely a means of making money; it was about spreading joy and ensuring that the spirit of Diwali illuminated homes everywhere.

As the festival drew near, the vibrant celebrations stirred a mix of emotions. For many, it was a time of joy and family reunions, yet others found themselves away from home, grappling with a sense of longing. However, the spirit of Diwali could still flicker brightly within their hearts, reminding them that they were never truly alone.

A grand cultural programme, Dandiya Raas, was organised by the Rajasthan Club at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Delhi. This lively event attracted thousands, transforming the stadium into a hub of music, dance, and festive cheer. The atmosphere overflowed with laughter, traditional garba, and stalls offering food and decorations, enhancing the celebratory ambiance. The Dandiya Raas event beautifully blended tradition with modernity, creating a memorable experience that celebrated love and unity.

The essence of Diwali this year resonated with themes of togetherness, love, and hope. The festival served as a poignant reminder of the beauty of connection and the power of kindness. May the spirit of Diwali continue to inspire us to spread joy and light in our lives and the lives of others, illuminating the path towards a brighter future.
