CyberPeace Foundation, a non-partisan civil society organization and Truecaller, a leading global communications platform conducted their first training in Jharkhand as part of the ongoing national #TrueCyberSafe campaign. The campaign was launched at Karim City College, Jamshedpur by Additional Director General of Police – Wireless RK Mallick, the Chief Guest at the event. MK Pal, Chief Infra & Security, at Tata Steel also graced the event with their presence.
The launch was followed by a training that focused on increasing awareness about cybercrime and building capabilities to navigate digital spaces safely. The event was attended by students, faculty, police officers and others.
The #TrueCyberSafe initiative aims to create awareness and train people on how to tackle cyber fraud, threats and scams while equipping them with the right tools to ensure a safer online experience. The national campaign has already reached more than 5 lakh people and is currently ongoing in 3 regions of India; the National Capital Region of Delhi, Karnataka and the North East. Overall, the campaign seeks to reach more than 16 lakh people in 5 regions of India.
Delivering the keynote address, Mallick said, “Technology is a tool that can be used for good or for bad. While technological innovations have connected people in ways never imagined before, it has also paved the way for harassment, bullying, stalking, phishing, identity theft, banking frauds, and more. In cognisance of these digital crimes, the government has instituted helpline numbers and online portals that can be used to report cases of cybercrimes. However, there is unfortunately a lack of awareness regarding such measures, and raising awareness is imperative if we want to create an environment that is safe for women in this country. To this end, I applaud Truecaller’s #TrueCyberSafe campaign to take a step in this direction and make our citizens digitally aware and conscious. I am certain that these training programs will add to their knowledge and create positive externalities that the society as a whole can benefit from. I would suggest to everyone that you can always log on to the Jharkhand police website for more information and support in case you need help.”
Pal said, “The Covid-19 pandemic has brought to light the vulnerabilities of cyberspace, which is evidenced by the rise in cybercrime cases in the past few years. It is imperative that we take measures to empower citizens, and the first step to achieving this is to raise awareness about digital safety and apprise people of the ways in which they can keep themselves safe in the digital world as well as proactively report cybercrimes. I am very happy to see #TrueCyberSafe play a role in raising awareness, and I am confident that this nationwide campaign will go a long way in realizing this goal.”
Vineet Kumar, Global President and Founder, CyberPeace Foundation said, “Cybercrimes are a growing concern impacting people of all genders, age groups, income groups and geography. Campaigns like #TrueCyberSafe are making sure netizens stay cyber-aware and cyber-alert. Prevention is the best solution.”
