Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), a public sector undertaking under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), marked its Diamond Jubilee Year on October 4, celebrating six decades of its contribution to India’s indigenous uranium mining and processing capabilities and the country’s nuclear energy programme.
The anniversary celebrations were held at Jaduguda in the presence of senior officials, scientists, engineers, technical personnel, employees, media representatives and other stakeholders.
Member (Finance), Atomic Energy Commission, Seema Jain attended the programme as the chief guest. During her visit, she toured UCIL’s Technology Demonstration Pilot Plant (TDPP) at the Research and Development Centre in Jaduguda. She also visited the proposed site of a new Dark Matter Laboratory at the 815-metre level of the Jaduguda underground mine.
Addressing the gathering, Jain said UCIL’s Diamond Jubilee marked six decades of scientific capability, institutional experience and dedicated service to the nation. She also paid tribute to Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha and other pioneers who laid the foundation of India’s uranium mining and processing capabilities.
Atomic Energy Commission Chairman and Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, extended his greetings on the occasion and highlighted the importance of continued innovation and capacity building in advancing India’s nuclear energy mission.
A major feature of the celebrations was a media workshop organised at the Narwapahar Information Centre. The workshop provided journalists with an opportunity to understand UCIL’s mining and milling operations and interact with scientists, engineers and technical experts.
Media representatives also visited UCIL’s uranium mining and milling facilities, where they were briefed on mining operations, ore handling and processing systems, as well as technologies and operational practices followed at the sites.
A DAE technology exhibition was also organised for school students, showcasing technologies and applications developed by various DAE units and institutions in the fields of nuclear energy and radiation technology.
UCIL Chairman and Managing Director Dr Kacham Anand Rao said the Diamond Jubilee was a significant milestone for every member of the UCIL family. He said the corporation had continuously strengthened its expertise and infrastructure in uranium mining and processing while enhancing its capabilities in technology, safety and environmental management.
