Jharkhand must lead fight against cybercrime: Governor

Jharkhand should not have any district or region identified with cybercrime and should instead emerge as a leading state in the fight against the growing threat, Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar said on Monday.
Addressing the second convocation of Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University at the Aryabhatta Auditorium in Ranchi as the chief guest, Gangwar urged young people to make technology their strength and wisdom their guide to help build a safer and digitally empowered society.
The Governor said the security landscape was facing new and complex challenges, including cybercrime, digital fraud, data breaches, financial crimes, misuse of artificial intelligence, deepfakes, voice cloning, misinformation and cyberattacks.
To tackle these threats, he said, young professionals must go beyond conventional education and develop technological expertise, a scientific outlook, strong analytical abilities and a habit of continuous learning.
Gangwar also stressed that the use of technology in the security sector must remain within the framework of law, human dignity, citizens’ rights and privacy.
Recalling that the foundation stone of Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University was laid by former Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Governor said the institution should promote solution-oriented research in areas such as cybercrime, criminal psychology, women and child safety, financial crimes, prevention of drug abuse and disaster management.
He also called for stronger academic linkages between the university, police administration, defence institutions and industry to provide students with better opportunities for field training and internships.
Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, who attended the convocation as the guest of honour, encouraged students to make full use of opportunities available to them. He said young people had the freedom to pursue their ambitions and urged them to use their capabilities in artificial intelligence, forensic science and digital technologies for nation-building.
Seth also advised the students to keep the spirit of ‘Nation First’ at the centre of their professional lives, maintain transparency in their work and actively contribute to the campaign for a drug-free India.
A total of 207 students from different faculties were awarded degrees at the convocation. Five meritorious students who excelled in their respective courses were also presented gold medals by the Governor.
Director of the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences and retired IPS officer G.K. Goswami attended the event as the guest of honour. University in-charge Vice-Chancellor Rahul Purwar, Registrar Dr Hemendra Kumar Bhagat, faculty members, officials and parents were also present.
