Chandrasekaran Announces Exit as Tata Sons Chairman
N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, has announced that he will step down from the position after completing his current term in February 2027 and will not seek reappointment. His decision comes ahead of Tata Sons’ Annual General Meeting scheduled for August 18, 2026. Chandrasekaran said he has completed 40 years of professional life with the Tata Group and described his decade-long leadership of Tata Sons as a great honour and responsibility. He has asked the board to begin the succession process soon to ensure a smooth transition.
The resignation follows disagreements within Tata Sons over extending his tenure. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously recommended a five-year extension beyond February 20, 2027. The Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the board had also recorded and recommended the proposal. However, when the resolution was placed before the Tata Sons board on February 24, 2026, it failed to pass because one board member did not support it. Chandrasekaran subsequently chose not to pursue the extension, saying the lack of unanimous support led him to defer the decision.
The development comes amid broader tensions between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, particularly involving board representation, strategic direction and the proposed exit of minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji. Differences between Chandrasekaran and Tata Trusts chairman Noel Tata reportedly contributed to uncertainty surrounding his reappointment.
Markets reacted negatively to the announcement. Shares of several major Tata Group companies fell during trading. At around 11:30 am, Tata Power declined 1.26%, TCS fell 3.9%, and Tata Steel dropped 1.83%, reflecting investor concerns about leadership uncertainty and its potential impact on the wider conglomerate.
Chandrasekaran has been a key figure in the Tata Group for decades. He joined the group in 1987 and rose through the ranks at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), becoming its CEO in 2009. In 2017, he became chairman of Tata Sons, succeeding Cyrus Mistry.
During his tenure, Chandrasekaran oversaw major strategic developments and difficult challenges across the conglomerate, including the acquisition and integration of Air India, pressure on TCS pricing, the Air India crash and a cyberattack affecting Jaguar Land Rover. Tata Sons oversees major businesses including TCS, Tata Motors and Air India.
His departure therefore marks a significant leadership transition for one of India’s largest and most influential business groups. The immediate priority for the Tata Sons board will be identifying a successor and managing the transition while maintaining stability across the group’s diverse businesses.
