Telangana Police attacked in Maharashtra's Nanded while arresting theft accused
A theft accused was arrested again on Monday, a day after a mob allegedly attacked a Telangana Police team and freed him in Maharashtra's Nanded district, prompting the personnel to fire in the air to disperse the crowd, an official said.
According to a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Ramesh Parshuram Gokla of Bazar Hatnur Police Station in Telangana's Adilabad district, the incident took place around 7.30 pm on Sunday near Gokulnagar in Kinwat tehsil of Nanded.
Police were investigating the theft of an autorickshaw from the Bazar Hatnur police station area after the vehicle was traced to Chikhli. The Telangana Police team detained Shaikh Bakr alias Jafar Shaikh in connection with the case.
The accused was being taken away in a private vehicle in handcuffs when a large group of men and women reportedly gathered around the vehicle.
The crowd allegedly assaulted the police personnel, damaged the vehicle and helped the accused escape.
As the situation worsened, the police fired several rounds into the air to disperse the mob, officials said.
Following an extensive search, police recaptured Shaikh Bakr on Monday afternoon.
Police are investigating the alleged involvement of other people in the incident, including around 50-60 persons named in the complaint. (with inputs from PTI)
