51 Indians recruited into Russian army killed: MEA
As many as 51 Indian Nationals recruited into the Russian Army have been killed so far, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, highlighting the grave risks faced by |Indians who became involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to figures shared by Misri, 227 Indian nationals were recruited into the Russian military, of whom 51 have died and 139 have been discharged. The figures provide a clearer picture of the scale of Indian involvement in the conflict and the casualties suffered by Indian citizens serving with Russian forces.
The Indian Government has been actively engaging with Russian authorities over the issue and has been seeking the release, discharge and repatriation of Indian Nationals serving in the Russian armed forces.
New Delhi has repeatedly raised the matter with Moscow, urging Russian authorities to ensure that Indian citizens are released from military service and allowed to return to India.
The latest disclosure comes amid continued diplomatic efforts by India to secure the return of Indians caught up in the Russia-Ukraine war.
The issue has emerged as a significant concern for the Indian Government, particularly as reports of Indians being recruited into the Russian military have surfaced over the course of the conflict.
Misri made the remarks during his visit to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, where discussions included matters concerning Indian nationals involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The figures underscore the human cost of the involvement of Indian nationals in the war, with dozens having lost their lives while others continue to seek discharge and repatriation.
India has maintained that its citizens should not be involved in the conflict and has continued diplomatic efforts with Russia to facilitate their safe return.
