Suspected drones near Amritsar airport prompt diversion of seven flights

The movement of multiple suspected drones near the operational area of Amritsar international airport on Sunday night led to the diversion of seven flights, including two international services, to Delhi, an official said on Monday.

The drone-like objects were detected near the runway area at around 10 pm, prompting an immediate security response. Punjab Police and other central security agencies were alerted following the sighting, the official said.

Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport Director Anirudh Kumar said several suspected drones were seen hovering around the airport's operational area, following which the police were informed.

Flight operations at the airport remained suspended for around one-and-a-half hours because of the suspected drone activity.

Kumar said the suspicious movement was detected close to the runway, leading authorities to temporarily halt flight operations as a security precaution.

Flights operated by Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express were among those diverted to Delhi, officials said.  (with inputs from PTI)
