Satya Niketan collapse: Seven dead, 11 rescued from debris
The death toll in the Satya Niketan building collapse in southwest Delhi rose to six on Monday as rescue and search operations entered their second day, with multiple agencies continuing efforts to locate anyone who may still be trapped under the debris.
Eleven people have so far been rescued from the decades-old multi-storey structure, which housed a boys’ paying guest accommodation near Delhi University’s South Campus.
The AIIMS JPN Apex Trauma Centre said it received 11 patients following the collapse. Five were brought dead, while another critically injured patient later died during treatment. Three patients remain admitted, one underwent limb surgery and another, who suffered minor injuries, was discharged after observation.
The building collapsed at around 1.30 pm on Sunday while repair work was reportedly underway. Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority have been conducting rescue operations through the night.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said one more person was rescued during the night but was brought dead, taking the death toll to six. Police are continuing efforts to trace people allegedly connected with the incident.
A case has been registered against the building owner and others in connection with the collapse. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
