IYC, NSUI leaders visit injured activists at Delhi hospital, demand probe into alleged police action

Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national in-charge Manish Sharma and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) president Vinod Jakhar visited injured activists at Lady Hardinge Hospital on Tuesday following a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral irregularities.
The visit came after NSUI organised a flash protest at Rajiv Chowk metro station, demanding Kumar’s resignation over allegations of electoral irregularities. Several protesters, including Jakhar, were detained by police.
Following the demonstration, Sharma, Jakhar and NSUI national in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar met the injured activists and enquired about their health, the IYC said in a statement. The organisation also alleged that police had used force against the protesters.
“The right to peaceful protest is a constitutional guarantee, not a privilege; any excessive use of force against student activists must be investigated and those responsible held accountable,” Sharma said.
The IYC called for an impartial inquiry into the incident and action against anyone found responsible for the unlawful use of force.
“Students raising their voices on public issues deserve to be heard, not subjected to violence,” the organisation said, urging police to exercise restraint while managing demonstrations.
The visit came amid protests in Delhi over alleged electoral irregularities and demands for accountability from the Election Commission.
The Delhi Police had not issued an immediate statement in response to the allegations made by the Congress’ youth wing. (with inputs from PTI)
