Generational hope

Balendra “Balen” Shah is a former rapper turned politician and structural engineer who has rapidly risen to national prominence in Nepal. Originally known for his socially conscious rap music — with tracks like “Balidan” (meaning “sacrifice”) critiquing corruption and inequality — Shah became a symbol of youth frustration. His music resonated with younger voters and urban audiences long disillusioned with traditional leadership.
Shah entered formal politics in 2022, winning the mayoral election in Kathmandu as an independent candidate on an anti corruption and reform agenda, defeating established party contenders. His tenure as mayor was marked by efforts to improve transparency, urban infrastructure and governance, though it also drew some criticism for confrontational tactics.
In early 2026, Shah joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) as its prime ministerial candidate and led the party to a landslide victory in the general election, beating veteran leaders and securing a commanding majority.
Educated in Nepal and holding a master’s degree in structural engineering from India, Shah blends technical training with grassroots activism. At around 35 years old, he embodies a generational shift in Nepali politics, championing anti corruption, job creation and broader reforms as he prepares to lead the country’s government.
