Maharashtra assesses drought-like conditions as rain break hits crops
A drought-like situation has emerged in several districts of Maharashtra following a prolonged break in rainfall that has damaged standing crops, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday.
The issue was discussed in detail during a state cabinet meeting, after which ministers were directed to conduct preliminary assessments in their respective districts and begin preparedness measures.
Fadnavis said the initial review was expected to be completed within a week, after which official crop surveys, or panchnamas, would be conducted to assess losses and facilitate immediate assistance to affected farmers.
The chief minister also said work on the farm loan waiver was progressing, with three lists already released, and directed officials to expedite the remaining lists.
He said the government would provide urgent support to farmers and make arrangements for drinking water and fodder wherever required.
Fadnavis said the state had anticipated a possible El Nino-related crisis and had launched the 'Vairan' programme to address fodder shortages. The government has also arranged additional electricity supply for farmers during evening hours, he said.
According to India Meteorological Department data, the country recorded a 15 per cent rainfall deficit between June 4 and September 19. The Southern Peninsula was the worst affected region, with a 29 per cent deficit. Maharashtra is part of the Southern Peninsula.
