Surprise inspection of Krishi Bazar Samiti to ensure smooth potato supply

Sunday, 08 December 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a decisive step to curb hoarding and black marketing of potatoes and ensure their availability at reasonable prices, the Agriculture Officer, acting on the directions of the District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner, conducted a surprise inspection of the Krishi Bazar Samiti in Parsudih.

The inspection focused on assessing the functioning of the Potato Sales Facility Center, established by the administration to address the surging demand for potatoes and prevent exploitation by black market operators. The Agriculture Officer confirmed that the facility center is operating efficiently, offering Bengal potatoes at Rs. 36 per kilogram and Uttar Pradesh (UP) potatoes at Rs. 25 per kilogram.

During the visit, the officer observed a significant number of UP potato-laden vehicles waiting for unloading, indicating a robust supply chain. The availability of potatoes from multiple states, including Bengal and UP, has been a strategic move to stabilize prices and prevent any shortage in the district.

The officer assured the public that there is no scarcity of potatoes in the district and stated that the administration is closely monitoring the situation to deter hoarding and illegal stockpiling. “Apart from Bengal, we are procuring potatoes from other states to ensure a steady supply. Our priority is to make essential food items accessible and affordable for everyone,” the Agriculture Officer stated.

In light of concerns over potential black marketing, the Agriculture Officer warned that stringent action would be taken against individuals found guilty of hoarding or engaging in any form of malpractice in the food grain supply chain. “We are working tirelessly to identify and penalize offenders. Black marketing and hoarding of any essential commodity, including potatoes, will not be tolerated,” the officer added.

The state government has directed local authorities to enforce regular inspections and maintain strict vigilance on the market dynamics to prevent artificial price inflation.

To further combat exploitation, the Agriculture Officer appealed to residents to purchase potatoes from the administration-run customer service centers. “These centers offer potatoes at reasonable prices, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this facility,” he urged.

The inspection was conducted with the support of agriculture inspectors and other field workers. The team ensured that the unloading and distribution processes were carried out smoothly and that there were no disruptions in the supply.

The administration’s proactive approach has been lauded by the local community, who expressed relief over the availability of reasonably priced potatoes amidst fluctuating market trends.

This surprise inspection underscores the administration’s commitment to protecting consumer interests and fostering a fair marketplace. The authorities reiterated their resolve to maintain transparency and curb any unethical practices that could harm the public.

The Deputy Commissioner’s directive reflects a broader agenda to address systemic issues in food distribution and ensure that basic necessities like potatoes remain accessible to all sections of society.

Local residents hope that these measures will not only stabilize prices but also build trust in the administration’s ability to regulate essential commodities effectively.
