Former MLA of Bokaro, Biranchi Narayan, welcomed the passage of the One Nation, One Election Bill in the Lok Sabha, calling it a step forward for the nation’s progress. He stated that frequent elections disrupt the country’s development and slow down growth.
Narayan remarked that for several years after independence, Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections were conducted simultaneously. However, the Congress party, driven by political interests, began dissolving state assemblies prematurely, pushing the nation into repetitive election cycles. He accused Congress of consistently undermining constitutional norms and processes.
He highlighted that simultaneous elections would end frequent impositions of the Model Code of Conduct, ensuring uninterrupted development work. “It will save the Prime Minister’s time and energy, reduce the constant election mode for political parties, and allow leaders to focus on governance and progress,” he added.
Narayan pointed out that this system would also reduce election expenses for both the nation and political parties. Furthermore, administrative staff, security personnel, doctors, teachers, and others involved in election duties would experience fewer disruptions, enabling them to focus on their core responsibilities.
He emphasized the benefits for remote and Naxal-affected regions, stating, “Holding elections together will ease the burden on security forces and reduce their casualties. It will also address voter fatigue caused by repeated polls.”
Narayan concluded by asserting that simultaneous elections would empower the Election Commission to innovate and ensure better compliance with electoral norms. He added that this approach would also curb social unrest, limit anti-social activities, reduce election-related tensions, and promote a more harmonious democratic environment.
