On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Department of English Studies and the National Service Scheme (NSS) at the Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) organized a two-day event titled "From the Margins to the Centre: Multiple Echoes of Disabilities and Inclusion." This significant programme was conducted in collaboration with the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation, and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC), Government of Bharat, Ranchi. The event aimed to foster awareness, promote inclusivity, and emphasize accessibility for persons with disabilities.
The first day of the event, 4th December, commenced with a series of interactive and thought-provoking activities aimed at celebrating the talents and resilience of persons with disabilities. Students from CUJ and CRC participated in a speech competition, where they eloquently addressed various challenges faced by persons with disabilities and underscored the urgent need for societal change. An on-the-spot painting competition, themed "Physical Diversity in the Fabric of Humanity," allowed participants to creatively express their views on inclusivity and human diversity through art. Additionally, an open-house quiz tested participants’ knowledge about disability rights and the history of the disability rights movement, fostering greater awareness and understanding.
A key highlight of the day was a vibrant Nukkad Natak (street play) performed by CRC students, including persons with disabilities. The play focused on raising awareness about Indian Sign Language (ISL) and emphasized the critical importance of communication and inclusion in everyday life. The day also featured an exhibition of assistive devices, showcasing advancements in technology that support persons with disabilities.
Dr. Sudhanshu Shekhar from the Department of English Studies at CUJ conceptualized the event, emphasizing the need for collective efforts in fostering an inclusive society. CRC Director Suryamani Prasad addressed the gathering, highlighting the role of awareness and education in empowering persons with disabilities. He expressed his commitment to future collaborations with CUJ to advance the cause of disability rights and inclusion.
Dr. Shakir Tasnim from CUJ also shared valuable insights, stressing the importance of integrating inclusive practices into educational frameworks and societal structures. His address emphasized that true inclusion can only be achieved through sustained efforts and active participation from all sectors of society.
Faculty members from CRC, including Dr. Priti Tiwari and Mukesh Kumar, contributed their perspectives, reinforcing the significance of continued dialogue and action.
