BJP’s West Delhi candidate Kamaljeet Sehrawat defeated the AAP candidate and veteran politician Mahabal Mishra by a margin of 196573 votes. Sehrawat secured a total votes of 838332 while Mishra got 641759. BSP’s Vishaka got only 7899 votes.
The former General Secretary of Delhi BJP is the first female candidate and MP from the constituency. With Sehrawat and former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj’s daughter Bansuri Swaraj winning in their constituencies, the national capital will send two female candidates to the Lok Sabha with Delhi sending just nine female candidates to the Parliament till now.
It is noteworthy that the party relayed the maximum number of star campaigners for election campaigning to the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat in a bid to make Sehrawat win against the Mishra, who has represented the same seat earlier from Congress’ ticket. Reacting to the win, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva claimed, “The development done by Prime Minister Modi's government in Delhi has won and the people of Delhi have completely rejected the corruption of Arvind Kejriwal and the opportunism of Congress.”
Sehrawat, former Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corp has replaced Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, who won the seat in 2019, for the BJP. Sehrawat comes from the Jat community and is expected to draw Jat voters who form a sizable chunk of the electorate often playing the role of kingmakers
About 24 candidates were in the fray to win the constituency with seven candidates contesting independently. More than 8,500 voters pressed the NOTA button in the EVM. Sharing her developmental plans for the area, she said, “I will focus on developing parks in my area, which are missing in many neighbourhoods, particularly in and around villages. Water supply too is a problem. We need to stop the growth of unauthorised colonies and ensure planned housing for all.”
