PM Modi speaks to Iran President Pezeshkian

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday held a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, welcoming the understanding reached ahead of the ceasefire and reaffirming India’s long-standing position that conflicts must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
During the conversation, President Pezeshkian briefed the Prime Minister on the recent developments in West Asia and outlined the way forward following the latest diplomatic efforts in the region. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the understanding reached and stressed that sustained engagement and diplomatic dialogue remain the only viable path to resolving regional tensions.
He also reiterated the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in West Asia. The Prime Minister further emphasised the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation and uninterrupted commerce, underscoring India’s interest in maintaining stability across the strategically significant region. Separately, President Pezeshkian had earlier extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Representing India at the ceremony will be Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
According to the announced schedule, the public farewell ceremony will begin at 6 a.m. (local time) on July 4 at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Prayer Grounds, which will be opened to mourners from that time. India has consistently called for restraint, dialogue and diplomatic engagement in addressing tensions in West Asia while emphasising the importance of regional peace, stability and the protection of global trade routes.
This marks the third conversation between the two leaders since the conflict erupted in West Asia on February 28, with Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other.
The leaders had spoken earlier on March 12 and March 21. In those calls, Prime Minister Modi underscored India’s priorities — the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the region, including in Iran — and the importance of ensuring unhindered transit of energy and goods. He also extended greetings on Navroz and Eid.
On June 30, 2026 – PM Modi again held a telephone conversation with President Pezeshkian after the ceasefire understanding. He welcomed the understanding reached, reiterated India’s support for resolving issues through dialogue and diplomacy, and stressed the need for lasting peace, stability, and freedom of navigation in West Asia.
