Major landslide in Nepal; Authorities issue high-alert
A large landslide in the Bhattar area of Api Himal Rural Municipality-1 in Darchula district has partially blocked the Chaulani River, prompting authorities to issue a high-alert warning for communities along the riverbanks.
The District Administration Office, Darchula, said the landslide was continuing and warned that further debris could completely obstruct the river. Such a blockage could create a temporary reservoir and trigger a sudden surge of water if the debris gives way, potentially affecting downstream settlements and the Chameliya River corridor.
Chief District Officer Bartaraj Paudel said police had been sent to the affected area to assess the situation, while authorities were monitoring the river and landslide site.
As a precaution, residents have been advised to remain vigilant, avoid going near the riverbanks during rainfall and immediately report any emergency. Ten families from the affected Bhattar settlement have also been relocated to relatives’ homes, with the local administration providing essential supplies including tents.
Authorities have urged downstream communities to take the warning seriously as the unstable slope continues to pose a potential flood risk.
