Indian Army honours Kargil hero Captain Kengurüse

The Spear Corps of the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles on Sunday solemnly commemorated the 27th Memorial Day of Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, Maha Vir Chakra (Posthumous), at Nerhe Phezha Village in Kohima district.
Fondly remembered as the “Hero of Nagaland,” Captain Kengurüse made the supreme sacrifice during the Kargil War on 28 June 1999. The solemn ceremony at the Kengurüse War Memorial was graced by Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, GOC, Spear Corps, alongside the fallen hero’s proud parents, Mr and Mrs Neiselie Kengurüse, veterans, and serving personnel.
The event commenced with wreath-laying ceremonies and the lighting of the Amar Jawan Jyoti, followed by a documentary screening on the officer’s bravery. Highlighting the finest military traditions, personnel of the 2 Rajputana Rifles — the battalion to which Captain Kengurüse belonged — specially interacted with and felicitated his parents, reaffirming their eternal regimental bond.
A grand ceremonial march past was presented by contingents of the Assam Rifles, the Nagaland Police Mahila Pipe Band, and NCC cadets. To mark the hero’s legacy of selfless dedication, a community outreach medical camp organised by the Assam Rifles was also inaugurated by the martyr’s father.
The formal proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks by the captain’s elder brother, Neingthoulie Kengurüse, who presented a book detailing the inspiring life of the fallen soldier to the GOC.
