India-Spain foreign ministers hold talks

At the invitation of External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar, Mr José Manuel Albares, Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, paid an official visit to India on 21 January 2026. During the visit, Minister Albares called on President Droupadi Murmu.
EAM Dr S. Jaishankar and Foreign Minister Albares held delegation-level talks, during which they reviewed the entire gamut of India-Spain bilateral relations.
Discussions covered key areas including trade and investment, defence and security cooperation, culture, tourism, and people-to-people ties. The year 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Spain, which is being commemorated as the India-Spain Dual Year of Culture, Tourism and Artificial Intelligence. On this occasion, the two Ministers jointly launched the official logo for the Dual Year celebrations.
The Ministers expressed satisfaction at the regularity of high-level political interactions and the effective functioning of institutional bilateral mechanisms.
They agreed to sustain and build upon this positive momentum in the years ahead. Both sides discussed ways to further enhance bilateral trade and investment, with particular focus on technology, renewable energy, defence industrial collaboration, urban infrastructure, and railways.
The two leaders also exchanged views on recent developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific, as well as on other regional and global issues of shared interest. They strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and underscored the importance of strengthening international cooperation to effectively combat terrorism.
During the meeting, Minister Albares handed over to EAM Dr S Jaishankar Spain’s declaration of accession to the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, reaffirming Spain’s commitment to a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
