Egg thrown at Ganesha idol triggers tension in south Mumbai, FIR registered
Tension briefly gripped south Mumbai's Mazgaon area after an egg allegedly landed on a Ganesha idol being taken to a pandal, prompting police to deploy additional personnel and intervene as people accompanying the procession gathered outside a nearby high-rise.
The incident occurred on Sunday night when the idol of the Mazgaoncha Morya Ganeshotsav Mandal was being transported to a pandal, a police official said.
According to police, unidentified persons allegedly threw eggs at the procession from the Continental Heights building. One of the eggs hit the Ganesha idol, angering members of the procession, who then gathered outside the high-rise.
Police intervened and brought the situation under control, while Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena also reached the spot. Heavy police deployment was subsequently put in place in the locality to prevent any further escalation and maintain peace, the official said.
The Byculla police have registered an FIR in connection with the incident under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, and Section 196, pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups.
No arrests have been made so far, the official said, adding that further investigation is underway.
