Odisha battered by heavy rain, orange alert in six districts
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Odisha on Monday under the influence of a low-pressure system, with eight locations recording more than 100 mm of rain in the 24 hours till 8.30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The highest rainfall of 169.4 mm was recorded at Joda in Keonjhar district, followed by Papadahandi in Nabarangpur with 158.8 mm and Paikmal in Bargarh with 120 mm. Kusumi and Jashipur in Mayurbhanj, Jharigaon in Nabarangpur, and Telkoi and Champua in Keonjhar also recorded over 100 mm of rainfall.
The IMD said the low-pressure area was located over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining parts of Jharkhand and north Odisha on Monday morning. The system is expected to move northwestwards across Jharkhand and north Odisha over the next 24 hours.
Heavy rain is likely across 16 of Odisha’s 30 districts on Monday. The IMD has issued an orange warning for Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur and Boudh, while a yellow warning is in place for 10 other districts.
Several parts of the state are also likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Similar weather conditions are expected to continue for the next six days.
Amid the heavy rainfall, all schools and anganwadi centres were closed in Nabarangpur district, while 89 schools in Bhadrak also remained shut on Monday.
