BRO moots strategies for infrastructure in North East
Jitendra Prasad, VSM, Additional Director General, Border Roads Organisation (Additional DGBR), addressed a special session on Wednesday at the Infra Build Northeast Conference organised by Indian Infrastructure at Guwahati on 16 September 2026.
Speaking on building roads in remote and difficult terrain, Prasad shared field insights from his 36 years of BRO’s experience in the most challenging sectors, including the Northeast region.
He further stressed four key themes: Firstly, key challenges during the planning and execution stage: Quality of DPRs, quality assurance, and maintenance post-construction were the challenges highlighted by him, secondly, new techniques & technology: use of LiDAR & drone surveys, AI and digital twins for project management, use of mechanised and automated machines/equipments, new generation pavement material, precast modular construction technology and specialised tech like Rejupave (Bio fuel) for cold climate and high altitude area were highlighted, thirdly bottlenecks and strategies: delays in utility shifting, extreme monsoon and short working season causes hindrances and frequent disruptions. He emphasised that all stakeholders should work in a synchronised manner to overcome them and, fourthly, priorities and upcoming opportunities: prioritising strategic frontier connectivity, development of alternate axes to create redundancy, by-passes to towns & cities, connecting tourism centres. He apprised regarding huge upcoming opportunities like high-speed economic corridors, road connectivity with ASEAN countries, Bridges over the Brahmaputra & other major rivers.
In his closing remarks, he said, “Let us build the Infrastructure — that connects the remote villages —connects the border to meet the National Security — Connects the economic hubs to ensure economic growth & more importantly that connects aspiration with opportunities, North East with Nation, India with the World & for the India of 2047.”
