Tuskers create panic in Garhwa

Monday, 30 December 2024 | PNS | Garhwa

A herd of elephants has caused chaos in the southern forests of Garhwa district, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old woman. She was Bhaganmia Korain from Korhati in Bhandaria. She died when she encountered the elephants while returning home from a relative's house near the forest, after being late from the Bhandaria market.

Officials from the forest department have arrived to gather information. The day before the tragedy, the department issued a red alert. They warned locals about the elephants in the Bhandaria forests. Residents were alerted with sirens, but sadly, this did not stop the woman's death.

This year, there have been twelve elephant-related incidents in Garhwa. Previous attacks have led to deaths, including a 60-year-old woman named Phoolkumari, who was killed on 27 July in Bilaitikher village. Reports of dangerous encounters with elephants have come from areas like Bhandaria, Dhurki, and Ramakanda. Just over a week ago, on 12 October, a 28-year-old man named Ramdev Singh was killed by elephants in Jonhikhand, while two of his friends escaped unharmed. Additionally, on 29 September, a 50-year-old woman, Swati Tirki, was trampled to death in the Dumuhwan forest area, and another woman was injured.

Casualties have increased across various police areas, with individuals such as Nageshwar Singh from Baligadh, Subhash Singh from Parro, Maharu Dealer, Ramshakal Singh from Jonhikhand, Swati Minj from Baeriya, and Sitaram Mochi from Upar Tola in Ramakanda losing their lives.

Southern Divisional Forest Officer A B Abraham told  that attempts were made to alert villagers and drive the elephants back before this incident. Despite these efforts, the death of Bhaganmia Korain highlights the dangers of wandering elephant herds.
