Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Monday appeared before the Punjab State Women’s Commission on Monday in connection with alleged defamatory remarks against rebel Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bibi Jagir Kaur. The hearing follows suo motu cognizance taken by the Commission under Section 12 of the Punjab State Women’s Commission Act, 2001.
Commission’s chairperson Raj Lalli Gill, addressing the media after the meeting, revealed that Dhami had submitted a written apology for his remarks and expressed regret in person. He also conveyed his willingness to apologize directly to Bibi Jagir Kaur. However, Gill expressed dissatisfaction with Dhami’s contrition, stating, “Mere apologizing does not absolve him of the act. His remarks were not just offensive to Bibi Jagir Kaur but also disrespectful to womankind as a whole.”
The controversy erupted after an audio clip of Dhami’s alleged remarks, reportedly made during a telephonic conversation with a journalist, surfaced on social media. Gill described the comments as “highly offensive and demeaning”, calling for Dhami’s immediate removal as SGPC president. She emphasized the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of women in Punjab.
Gill also shared that she had spoken to Bibi Jagir Kaur, who expressed deep displeasure over the incident. “Bibi Jagir Kaur is very upset with Dhami’s remarks. I have assured her that the Commission will take all necessary steps to address the matter,” she said. The next course of action will be decided after consulting Kaur and reviewing Dhami’s response.
The Commission had earlier issued a notice to Dhami, requiring him to provide a written explanation by December 17. Gill warned that failure to comply would lead to legal recommendations against Dhami. While Dhami has sought forgiveness and pledged to follow the Commission’s directives, the panel’s chairperson maintained that such acts of disrespect could not be pardoned lightly.
Dhami has apologized for his remarks. “I will abide by the orders of the Commission,” read his letter.
