The precarious health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, on an indefinite hunger strike for 21 days, took center stage on Monday as Punjab MPs raised the issue in the Parliament, besides meeting Dallewal at the protest site. With demands for a legal guarantee on MSP and justice for farmers gaining momentum, political leaders across parties united to voice their concerns.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal made a fervent appeal in Parliament to the Central Government to accept the farmers' demands, emphasizing the urgency of saving Dallewal’s life. She reminded the Union Government of its promise to fulfill farmers' demands when repealing the contentious agricultural laws.
Harsimrat criticized the indifference of officials sent to persuade Dallewal to end his fast, calling their response superficial and inadequate. She also chastised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Government in Punjab for failing to effectively press the matter with the Centre.
Meanwhile, AAP MP from Sri Anandpur Sahib Malvinder Singh Kang visited Dallewal at the Khanauri border, expressing deep concern over his health. Kang lambasted the Modi-led Central Government for ignoring the farmers’ plight despite the Supreme Court’s directives to ensure Dallewal receives medical care. “The government’s apathy toward farmers is disheartening. Immediate action is needed to resolve their demands, including MSP, debt relief, and justice for the Lakhimpur Kheri victims,” he asserted.
Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also met Dallewal at the protest site, commending his resilience and urging Punjabis to unite in support. He criticized both the Centre and the AAP Government for neglecting farmers' concerns, describing their stance as an assault on democracy.
Warring emphasized Congress’s solidarity with farmers and vowed to escalate the matter in Parliament and national forums.
