MeitY to launch new initiatives once new Government formed: Secretary

Thursday, 06 June 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

As the NDA prepares for a third term in Government, IT Secretary S Krishnan announced that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will continue advancing its tech initiatives.

Speaking at a Software Technology Park of India (STPI) event, Krishnan emphasized the importance of new legislative and regulatory frameworks in light of the rapid progress in AI and other technologies.

Krishnan noted that several new initiatives are planned and will be rolled out once the new government is formed. He assured that the Ministry’s institutional memory would ensure continuity in efforts like the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) rules and the Digital India legislation framework.

The NDA has a clear majority in the 543-member Lok Sabha, with the BJP securing 240 seats and a total of 272 with allies, while Congress obtained 99 seats. This is the first time since 2014 that the BJP will

need allies for a majority.

In his address, Krishnan projected that India’s digital economy will triple to a trillion dollars by 2030. He urged the industry to leverage opportunities in AI and next-generation technologies, emphasizing the need for India to become a product-focused nation, creating intellectual property. He acknowledged that while software services offer stable margins, venturing into product development could yield significant gains and foster a strong entrepreneurial culture in India.
