Thursday, 28 November 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a bye-elections schedule for vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana along with three other States. The bye-election will be held on December 20 for a Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana. The Rajya Sabha seat became vacant due to the resignation of Krishan Lal Panwar, for which the bye-election would be held. The seat’s term ends August 1, 2028.

Panwar resigned from the Upper House seat on October 14 and is currently a minister in the Haryana government. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana is likely to retain the Rajya Sabha seat. 46 votes will be required to win the bye-poll if voting takes place. The ruling BJP has 48 MLAs in the 90-member assembly as well as the support of three Independents.

As per the election schedule issued by the ECI, the notification will be issued on December 3. Nominations can be filed until December 10. The scrutiny of nominations will be done on December 11, and nominations can be withdrawn until December 13. Voting will take place on December 20 from 9 AM to 4 PM, and the counting of votes will be held on the same day. The election process will be completed on December 24. To ensure free and fair elections, the officials concerned have been asked to ensure adequate measures for close monitoring of the election process by appointing observers, it stated.
