State Cabinet rejig likely

Thursday, 24 August 2023 | PNS | Bhopal

After Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel late on Tuesday night, it is expected that cabinet reshuffle is likely in a couple of days. It was anticipated that Chief Minister would add four new ministers to his Cabinet, aiming to address caste-based representation right before the upcoming State Assembly elections. This move aims to balance Upper Caste and Other Backward Class (OBC) representation within the Cabinet.

Political observers feel that this exercise is to battle the anti-incumbency, but making new ministers only for around 45 days is not going to solve the purpose. In such a short span of time, there will not be much for the incumbent ministers. However, induction of new ministers in the cabinet, before elections is considered important.

Polls in five states, including Madhya Pradesh, is expected to set the tone for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress had returned to power in Madhya Pradesh in 2018 but lost it in March 2020 when 22 Jyotiraditya Scindia loyalist legislators quit the party and resigned from the state assembly.

Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday asserted his party BJP will secure a clear majority in the upcoming assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh and form the next government.  He said, "I am not an astrologer to tell the number of seats (that BJP will win). But we will form a full majority government in the state," he told reporters here during his visit to the Gwalior-Chambal division which accounts for 34 assembly segments.
