Mystery shrouds undertrial’s death

Friday, 28 April 2023 | PNS | Lucknow

A prisoner died under suspicious circumstances in the district jail in Mainpuri.

While the local police claimed that the prisoner was ill and died a natural death, his family members alleged that the police brutality led to his death. They demanded action against the cops and also a high-level probe into the matter.

The deceased was identified as Bhure of Gihar Colony in Mainpuri Kotwali area.

Bhure was arrested and sent to jail two days ago by the police after a warrant was issued against him. “His health deteriorated in jail, after which he was taken to the hospital where he died,” police said.

Meanwhile, the relatives of the deceased alleged that the police took him away, beat him up and killed him in the lock-up.

Mainpuri City Circle Officer Santosh Kumar said that Bhure was brought by the police on a non-bailable warrant (NBW) from the court, and his death was being investigated.

Samajwadi Party’s former MLA Raju Yadav demanded that Bhure's post-mortem be conducted by the panel of doctors and compensation of Rs 20 lakh be given to the family because one of his brothers had also died in the same way.

Lok Sabha member from Mainpuri, Dimple Yadav, also targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party government on the death of the prisoner in the jail and called for strict punishment to the guilty police personnel. She took to Twitter and wrote in Hindi, "Murder in police custody is not stopping in UP! Bhure Gihar was murdered by the police in the Kotwali police station area of Mainpuri. Atrocities against the poor in the BJP government are condemnable. Strict punishment should be given to the accused policemen."

Meanwhile, depressed by blackmailing by a girl, a youth committed suicide in Jhansi.

The family members lodged a report in this regard and further investigations are on.

The youth’s relatives also blocked the road on Thursday morning, demanding action in the matter.

Reports said that one Sonu Prajapati of Kumhar Kuan area under Nawabad police station was blackmailed by a girl. The relatives of the victim alleged that a girl and her associates were blackmailing Sonu for the past few months. They claimed that a fake application was also handed over to the local police against Sonu by the girl in which she alleged that the accused had molested her. The family claimed that through blackmailing, the girl took Rs 1.5 lakh and was now demanding Rs 5 lakh more and had threatened to lodge fake reports against Sonu if he failed to give money. They claimed that depressed by the blackmailing, Sonu ended his life inside his room on Wednesday night.

The accused girl and her mother earlier lived near Sonu Prajapati’s house.

Police registered a case and were making further investigations.
