In a stunning medical feat, the General Surgery Department at AIIMS Bhopal successfully carried out a six-hour distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy, removing a large recurrent papillary cystic neoplasm measuring 14.5x15 cm.
Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, expressed his admiration for the surgical team's achievement, saying, "This complex and life-saving surgery showcases the exceptional skill and dedication of our medical professionals at AIIMS Bhopal. Our team demonstrated the very best in surgical expertise, using advanced technology and precision to tackle a challenging case successfully. We remain committed to delivering the highest quality of healthcare and pushing the boundaries of medical excellence."
The patient, a 45-year-old woman, had a history of surgery for a similar condition. However, the tumor had returned and expanded to a considerable size, making its removal even more daunting. The tumor's growth had caused it to adhere to critical structures such as the stomach, large intestine, and the left renal vein, posing serious risks during surgery. This situation required the utmost precision to avoid damaging these vital organs while ensuring the entire tumor was excised.
The complex procedure, which involved the delicate removal of part of the pancreas and the spleen, was expertly performed by a surgical team led by Professor Dr. Manish Swarnkar, accompanied by Dr. Moorat Singh Yadav and Dr. Surya Jain. Dr. Manish Swarnkar remarked, "This was not an ordinary case. The tumor's large size and its attachment to surrounding organs created a uniquely complex challenge.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our team and the cutting-edge technology at AIIMS Bhopal, we were able to overcome these difficulties. The patient has responded well to the procedure, and her recovery is progressing positively."
The surgery's success involved meticulous dissection to separate the tumor from nearby organs with minimal damage to surrounding tissues.
The decision to proceed with a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy was made to ensure the complete removal of the tumor, reducing the risk of future recurrences and complications. Such rare tumors, known as solid pseudopapillary tumors, are challenging to manage but can be effectively treated through comprehensive surgical approaches like this.
