Children should be kept away from mobile phones to avoid risk of myopia in eye. They must instead use a book or desktop to study, ophthalmologist and retinal surgeon Dr Santosh Singh Patel said on Sunday.

Dr Patel works at the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, the biggest in Chhattisgarh.

He said after Covid-19 pandemic, the children were using smartphones for longer hours. This, he said, was not good for eyes. For entertainment, television is most ideal, he said.

Dr Patel said there had been incidents of explosion and fire caused by smartphones due to excessive heating, excessive gaming or overcharging.

The blast can occur even in hand or pocket or after receiving a call. It causes physical and mental harm to the patients, family members and society, the doctor said.

He suggested using a phone case to avoid physical damage, avoiding extreme outdoor temperature, charging the phone at a distance and replacing a battery immediately if it swells.

He added that the phone should be charged to               maximum 80 percent using the company recommended accessories.
