AI though noteworthy, is still work in progress, as was evident in Ai-Da’s address to House of Lords
Artificial intelligence or AI as it is popularly known, has come a long way. It is no more confined to rudimentary chores like cleaning or serving but taking up more complex tasks such as designing, surgery, creating artworks, etc. which were hitherto impossible for machines to undertake. A demo of the AI power was witnessed by the UK parliament where a humanoid robot, Ai-Da, addressed it. Though, not everything went as planned as Ai-Da, while addressing went to sleep due to a glitch and had to be rebooted. It proved that though technology has advanced significantly, it is still a work in progress. Ai-Da was created in 2019 by Aidan Meller. In the first-ever address of its kind, Ai-Da spoke to members of the 'Communications and Digital Committee' about the scope and nature of AI's creativity and if creativity itself was to undergo a paradigm shift due to Artificial Intelligence. The UK committee asked it: How do you produce art and how is this different from what human artists produce? In response, AI-Da candidly said, that it did not have subjective experiences, despite being able to talk about them. It had to depend on, computer programs and algorithms. That is the truth. Although not alive, it can still create art but that is as meaningless as a parrot reciting Sanskrit Shlokas.
Ai-Da also talked about what constituted art. It said art can be many things, from a painting to a drawing or a poem. And that its art practice includes all of the above. At the end of the day for AI no matter how advance it is just zeros and ones, devoid of any value system whatsoever. Technology has already had a huge impact on the way we create art. Indeed technology is changing the way we think and act and in the future, its impact would be much more profound. However, it would always have limitations. Creativity for is not mechanical it is human emotion reflected on paper or screen. No matter how beautiful an AI painting might be, it would not reflect human emotion, at least for now. Besides, as AI enters more complex domains such as writing medical prescriptions or taking military decisions we would have to tread with caution as it could go wrong as Ai-Da and the result could be catastrophic. Maybe we are creating Frankenstein's monster rechristened AI. The very thought sends shivers down the spine!
