Former poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s four-hour long meeting with the Gandhis on Tuesday has sparked an all-round buzz about his association with the Congress in the days to come.
AICC sources said if things materialise then Kishor may be appointed the working president of the Congress. Kishor did not respond to calls and text messages seeking his comments on the development.
Sources close to Kishor said the poll strategist’s first love was always the Congress with which his association started when he decided to come back to the country to do some projects when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister.
He had also made some political presentations to the UPA, but things didn’t work out the way he would have liked. Thereafter, he decided to move to Gujarat and helped the BJP to several victories, including the 2014 Lok Sabha with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the poll show.
Kishor later joined the JD(U) and was number two to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in party affairs. He quit the party over “ideological” differences with Kumar.
In recent days he has met NCP supremo Sharad Pawar a couple of times and was also instrumental in bringing together the Opposition parties to chalk out a common strategy for the 2024 elections.
A day after Kishor held discussions with Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi speculation has intensified over whether the poll strategist will join the grand old party.
This can be corroborated by his recent comment that the Congress “must realise that it has a problem and then do something about it”.
“They are not open to working in the ways suggested by people like Kishor or others. They won’t be open to working with my style of functioning,” Kishor had told a TV interview once.
