Cyber crime team of the Gurugram police on Wednesday busted an illegal call centre operating in Sector-45 in Gurugram.
The call centre mostly used to cheat US nationals on the pretext of Amazon security support service, the police said on Wednesday. The culprits were duping the US national since January 2020. While duping their clients, they used to introduce themselves as service provider of the company.
According to the police, a team of thr cyber crime police station led by ACP (DLF) Karan Goyal, raided the call centre which was located at plot number 210-A, Sector-45 in Gurugram following a tip-off .
During the raid, the police arrested two persons in connection with the matter and seized 2 mobile phones along with other electronic gadgets.
The arrested accused have been identified as Praveen Kumar (32) of Rohtak and Manish Kumar (32) of Gurugram. The arrested duo were the co-partners of the fake call centre which went by the name 'Squad Company'.
During both raid, the police had spotted 13 men, who were working at the fake call centre and were communicating with US nationals. However, after questioning the police have released youths who were working there.
“We received specfic inputs that a fake call centre had cheated several US national on the pretext of Amazon security support service provider in Sector- 45 area. The youths were employed at the call centre, which were being operated without a license issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT),” said Karan Goyal, ACP (DLF).
“During the questioning, the accused revealed that they used to communicate US citizens as Amazon security support service providers and charge via E-Gift redeemed card. The arrested accused used to work in Delhi-Gurugram based call centres a year back from there they got an idea to cheat American citizens" he added.
“The matter is under investigation. How the accused was operating the fake call centre it’s a part of an investigation. The involvement of other people cannot be ruled out. The culprits are on police remand for further questioning,” the officer said.
An FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the IT Act have been registered at Cyber crime police station.
