Veteran Tamil filmmaker and actor K Bhagyaraj passes away at 73 after cardiac arrest

Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 73. Hospital sources confirmed that the celebrated filmmaker breathed his last while undergoing treatment in Chennai.
A stalwart of Tamil cinema, Bhagyaraj was renowned for his distinctive storytelling, subtle humour and witty dialogues that resonated with audiences across generations. His films, often centred on middle-class families and everyday life, earned him widespread acclaim during a career spanning more than five decades.
Among his most memorable films as a director and actor are Andha 7 Naatkal, Mundhanai Mudichu, Chinna Veedu, Enga Chinna Rasa, Suvarilladha Chiththirangal, Darling Darling Darling and Idhu Namma Aalu. He acted in over 75 films and directed around 25 movies, leaving an indelible mark on Tamil cinema.
Born as Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Tamil Nadu's Erode district, he began his film career as an assistant to legendary director Bharathiraja before emerging as one of the industry's most successful filmmakers. Besides cinema, he edited the Tamil weekly magazine Bhagya and authored several novels.
Bhagyaraj is survived by his wife, former actress Poornima Bhagyaraj, son and actor Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, and daughter Saranya.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar described Bhagyaraj's death as a great loss to Indian cinema, praising his creative brilliance and lasting contribution to filmmaking. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami also paid tribute, calling his demise an irreparable loss to the film industry and remembering his admiration for AIADMK founder M.G. Ramachandran.
