MGNREGA replaced by VB-G RAM G as new rural jobs scheme begins from July 1

The Centre has officially rolled out the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G, replacing the nearly two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) from July 1. The new rural employment framework is aimed at aligning job creation with the government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision while strengthening rural infrastructure and livelihoods.
One of the biggest changes under the new law is the increase in the guaranteed employment period from 100 days to 125 days per rural household each financial year.
The government has also notified revised wage rates, ensuring that workers receive at least ₹300 per day, with state-specific wages varying depending on local conditions. The scheme places greater emphasis on creating durable community assets, improving transparency through technology, and integrating village-level development plans with national infrastructure goals.
The launch marks one of the most significant reforms in India's rural employment policy since 2005. While the government says the new framework will improve income security and rural development, opposition parties have criticised the move, arguing that replacing MGNREGA could dilute the legacy of the landmark employment guarantee programme.
