Man arrested for stabbing 2 security guards after asking them to recite the Kalma
A 31-year-old man, identified as Zaib Zuber Ansari, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing two security guards in Mumbai’s Naya Nagar area after questioning them about their religion.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 4 am at an under-construction building located behind Wockhardt Hospital. Ansari reportedly asked the guards to recite the kalma, a declaration of faith in Islam, before attacking them.
The victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the same hospital for treatment. Mishra managed to reach the facility on his own, while Sen was assisted by a local resident, Nayab Sheikh, who found him injured and took him first to the police station and then for medical care.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and arrested the accused within 90 minutes of the attack. He was taken to the Naya Nagar Police Station, where a case was registered against him under charges including attempted murder and promoting enmity between groups.
Ansari was later produced before a court in Thane and remanded to police custody until May 4.
A joint investigation is being carried out by the police and the state Anti-Terror Squad (ATS). Officials have urged the public not to spread rumours or misinformation, warning of strict action against those who do so.
Authorities are also examining electronic devices seized from the accused to determine whether the attack was an isolated act or part of a larger conspiracy. Sources indicated that references such as “ISIS”, “lone wolf”, “jihad”, and “Gaza” were found in handwritten notes recovered from him.
Preliminary findings suggest that Ansari had previously lived in the United States for several years before returning to India. He was reportedly residing alone in the Mira Road area and earning a livelihood by conducting online chemistry classes. Investigators believe he may have been influenced by radical content accessed online.
