Mahua Moitra accuses BJP for alleged egg attack

Amid reports of fresh egg attacks — this time on pro-Mamata Banerjee Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra — the Calcutta High Court has directed the Bengal Government to take measures so that eggs are not thrown at arrested persons and to prepare guidelines for transporting the accused persons to court or other places.
Hearing a public interest litigation, a Division Bench of acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakrabarty earlier on Tuesday had issued necessary directions to the State and asked the government to file an action-taken report on egg attacks.
Meanwhile, eggs and mud were allegedly hurled at a TMC MP loyal to former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she was allegedly attending a party programme at the Kaliganj area in Krishnagar (Nadia).
Moitra alleged that she had been to the residence of a TMC leader, Alifa Ahmed, when the attack took place. Some people allegedly assembled outside the residence of Ahmed and raised slogans and hurled eggs and mud while Moitra was engaged in a meeting inside, sources said, adding they carried no flag and supported no party. However, Moitra complained that they had been sent by the BJP leadership. It was a BJP-orchestrated attack, she alleged, saying, “After the change of government in the state, law and order has collapsed. The police administration is a mute spectator. The BJP has now planned to attack me. “
These are not ordinary people; they are BJP workers.” She would move the High Court against the attack, she said.
Sources said that the police and central forces soon reached the spot and dispersed the crowd.
There has been a spate of egg attacks on the TMC leaders, particularly those who were being arrested on charges of corruption and taken to court or police stations. Pro-Mamata TMC MLA and senior leader Kunal Ghosh also said that he was also attacked with eggs outside the residence of the former Chief Minister. Similarly, TMC leaders like Jayprakash Majumdar and Sabyasachi Dutta were also attacked with eggs, while being taken to the police station.
Meanwhile, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya said that “throwing eggs was not the culture of BJP” and asked the party men to desist from such acts. “There may be some new imports who have changed colours overnight after the political change and have been throwing eggs to settle their own scores … still this is not tolerated … this is not BJP agenda … there is no place for arrogance in politics … this must stop,” he said.
