LG Sandhu urges tech-driven innovation for Delhi’s future

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday said technology, scientific research, and innovation must become the foundation of Delhi’s urban transformation, stressing the need for stronger coordination between governance and scientific institutions to address challenges related to public health and environmental sustainability.
Speaking at a National Technology Day programme organised by Indraprastha Vigyan Bharati at the Vice Regal Lodge of Delhi University, the Lieutenant Governor said India’s future growth would depend on how effectively science and technology are integrated with governance and public service delivery.
Addressing scientists, academicians, researchers, and students, Sandhu said modern cities cannot rely on isolated solutions to tackle complex urban problems.
He said technology-driven systems and scientific planning are necessary to improve civic services and strengthen sustainability in rapidly growing cities like Delhi. The Lieutenant Governor said Delhi has the institutional capability to become a leader in technology-based public health systems. Referring to diseases such as dengue and malaria, he said AI-powered forecasting models, PCR testing, and predictive disease surveillance systems could help authorities identify health risks before they escalate into larger public health crises.
He said institutions such as AIIMS, IIT Delhi, and the National Institute of Immunology possess the expertise required to build advanced health monitoring systems. However, he added that the key challenge lies in connecting scientific research with governance mechanisms and practical implementation.
