Landslide buries homes in China's Chongqing, rescue teams search for trapped residents

A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall struck Pengshui County in southwest China's Chongqing municipality on Friday, burying more than 10 residential buildings and leaving several people trapped under debris.
Emergency rescue teams were immediately deployed to the affected area, where search operations are continuing to locate and rescue survivors. Authorities said at least nine people had been rescued, while the exact number of those still trapped remains unclear.
According to Chinese state media, the landslide occurred around 9 a.m. local time after a large mass of rocks and soil collapsed from a nearby mountainside. Rescue workers are using specialised detection equipment, excavators and search teams to clear debris and reach those believed to be buried. Officials have also sent thousands of emergency relief supplies, including tents, folding beds and family emergency kits, to assist affected residents.

The disaster took place near the Wujiang River, an area known for its mountainous terrain, where prolonged rainfall has increased the risk of landslides. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable locations to remain alert as rescue efforts continue and weather conditions are being closely monitored.
