Manipur CM seeks probe into death of musician in Delhi
Imphal, Sep 8 (PTI) Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Tuesday urged Delhi CM Rekha Gupta to ensure a fair probe into the death of a musician from the state who was allegedly assaulted by a group of men in the national capital.
Singh strongly condemned the death of 54-year-old Chongtham Vikram Singh, who succumbed to injuries after he was allegedly assaulted outside his apartment in Kilokari village in Delhi in the early hours of Monday.
The victim had objected to a group of men, including delivery workers and dhaba staff, allegedly shouting and drinking alcohol outside his residence, leading to the assault, police said.
Seven men have been arrested and a juvenile apprehended in connection with the incident, they said.
The chief minister urged Gupta to ensure that the investigation is conducted under the direct supervision of senior police officers and that all those involved in the assault are apprehended without delay and prosecuted in accordance with law.
"No one should have to face such violence or lose their life simply for seeking peace in their own neighbourhood," Singh said in a statement, condemning the incident as a "senseless and brutal act of violence".
He said the incident was a painful reminder of the safety concerns faced by people from the Northeast who live, study and work in Delhi, and stressed that such incidents should not be treated as isolated cases.
Singh also urged the Delhi government to strengthen security measures in localities with significant populations of students and working professionals from Manipur and other northeastern states.
The North East Students Society, Delhi University, had also condemned the killing of Singh, describing him as a "respected Manipuri musician" and demanding a swift, fair and thorough investigation.
