India wins bronze at Wheelchair Rugby Asian Championship

India secured its first-ever international medal in wheelchair rugby, clinching bronze at the Wheelchair Rugby Asian Regional Championship 2026 in Bali, Indonesia.
Competing without government funding or sponsorship, the team of eight athletes personally raised funds, with each contributing around $1,250 to purchase specialised rugby wheelchairs. Led by Captain Nikhil Gupta, the squad—including Anil Kumar, Ajeet, Bhavesh Trivedi, Dhawal Patel, Fayaz Sheikh, and Gokulakannan—showcased remarkable resilience under Coach Devid Kumar.
Despite challenges like intense heat, injuries to four players, and equipment shortages, India’s performance was outstanding. A sporting gesture by the Indonesian team, which shared spare wheelchairs, enabled their participation.
