India tells citizens to exit Iran as turmoil deepens

The Indian government has urged its citizens currently living in Iran to leave the country at the earliest as the security situation continues to worsen following widespread anti-government protests and a forceful crackdown by authorities.
In a fresh advisory, the Indian Embassy in Tehran asked all Indian nationals — including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists — to depart using any available mode of transport, including commercial flights. The embassy also cautioned those remaining in the country to stay vigilant and steer clear of protest sites.
“In light of the rapidly changing circumstances, Indian citizens in Iran are advised to leave by available means. Those still in the country should exercise extreme caution, avoid demonstrations, remain in close contact with the embassy, and closely follow local media updates,” the advisory said.
Separately, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi has issued a strong warning discouraging Indians from travelling to Iran until further notice. The ministry reiterated that the situation remains volatile and could deteriorate further. The latest warning follows an earlier advisory issued on January 5, in which Indian nationals were advised to avoid non-essential travel to Iran and to remain cautious amid growing unrest.
The protests erupted late last month in Tehran after the Iranian rial plunged to historic lows, intensifying public anger over economic hardships. What began as demonstrations over inflation and unemployment has since spread to all 31 provinces, transforming into a broader movement calling for political reforms.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the nationwide protests have resulted in more than 2,500 deaths, sharply escalating concerns over human rights and internal stability.Indian authorities have said they are closely monitoring developments and remain in touch with their mission in Iran to ensure the safety of Indian citizens.
